Maryland Paid Leave Program Is Delayed Until 2028

An earlier FNA blast from late last year described an upcoming Paid Leave program (known as the FAMLI Program) for the state of Maryland. You can read the entire article HERE. Due to the recent volatility of the federal government and its likely impact on the state, the Maryland General Assembly has recently approved the delayed implementation of the FAMLI Program by a significant degree.
Under the new bill, implementation of the FAMLI Program will be delayed a full 18 months:
- Employee payroll deductions will begin on January 1, 2027
- Benefits will become available on January 1, 2028
The General Assembly codified their approval in a bill on April 7 and it is expected to be signed by the governor very soon. This bill has provided employers significant time to create and implement their own payroll deduction plans for the FAMLI Program.
This is an update to a compliance blast released earlier this year which described these changes as a proposal.
