New York State Adopts New First Aid Requirements in the Workplace

New York State has recently rolled out a new addition to its first aid requirements. In addition to other required first aid supplies, employers operating within the state must also have an opioid antagonist at each business location (though not at each first aid station).
This new law applies to all employers in the state that are required to maintain first aid supplies under OSHA. The new law defines an “opioid antagonist” as a drug approved by the FDA that neutralizes the effects of opioids in the body.
The law is set to be implemented on December 13, 2026. The New York State Department of Labor will be adding amendments to the law in the near future to address a few of the law’s unanswered questions.
Employers should prepare for the impending requirements by updating their OSHA-required first aid lists to include the required opioid antagonist. This will be another product businesses will have to keep track of at the workplace and refill as necessary.
