Maryland Paid Leave Program May be Delayed Until 2028

An earlier FNA blast from late last year described an upcoming Paid Leave program (known as the FAMLI Program) for the state of Maryland. You can read the entire article HERE. Due to the recent volatility of the federal government and its likely impact on the state, the Maryland Department of Labor has recently proposed delaying the implementation of the FAMLI Program by a significant degree.
Under the proposal, implementation of the FAMLI Program will be delayed a full 18 months:
- Employee payroll deductions would begin on January 1, 2027
- Benefits would become available on January 1, 2028
This is merely a proposal and has not yet been approved by the State General Assembly. Employers should still prepare to begin payroll deductions for employees on July 1, 2025 until these delays are officially adopted. FNA Insurance Services will update this article once the new implementation dates become official.
